a month in space

Space campaign time is measured in months, it is the base unit of time. Every 2-6 months the planetary seasons change, opening up new jobs and presenting new dangers.

Working for both sides of the blockade to pay for the crushing starship debt. Time is nothing but adding and subtracting credits. They say that a month in space is darker than closing your eyes at night. No starlight reaches these depths. It was not meant for human eyes.

At the start of every month roll for a prologue:

  1. Encounter. Authority check, pirate ambush, patron meeting.
  2. Setback. Unexpected costs, rivals make a move.
  3. Faction event. Organisations clash, take control of a location.
  4. Local event. Festivity, eclipse, gathering.
  5. Imperial event. Coronation, recession, rebellion.
  6. Benefit. Unexpected prospect or gift.

You learn about a new rumour, then follow the CORE procedure:

  1. Costs: pay living expenses for the crew, a credit each.
  2. Opportunity: declare a goal for the month, such as exploring an anomaly, delivering goods or retrieving a lost heirloom. Proceed to the recovery stage when the goal is reached.
  3. Recovery: rest and conduct starship repairs, or spend downtime on exercising, studying, socialising, buying furniture.
  4. Epilogue: apply consequences based on this month's goal, change the crew’s standing with the factions involved. Proceed to next month.

travelling across space

Journeys in Imperial space can be either short, regular or long. Orbital travel is quick and does not require recording unless called for by special circumstances. Traversing common trade routes takes around a week, so a crew can take on 2-3 journeys per month. Distant and deep space travel takes around one month, so the CORE procedure is followed with the goal of arriving at the destination.
